Sweet & Spicy Baked Sweet Potato Fries

The thing I don’t get about fried food is that it needs to be fried.  Fortunately for me, I have never been a huge fan of fried foods anyway, but I do live in the south, so I’ll admit I love the occasional hush-puppy.   (Disclaimer, a hush-puppy is a deep-fried cornbread ball, not an actual puppy – I am still a vegetarian).


I can do without French fries, no problem.  I usually crave sweets more than savory/salty foods.  That being said, it’s sweet potato fries that I really can’t do without.


Sweet potatoes are so delicious though, they don’t need to be fried (in my opinion).  Toss them in a sweet and spicy combination of spices and bake them until nice and crisp and the result is just as irresistible (without all the grease).


Sweet & Spicy Baked Sweet Potato Fries


  • 2 large Sweet Potatoes
  • 2-3 TBSP Olive Oil
  • 2 tsp Smoked Paprika
  • ½  tsp Cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground Cumin
  • ½ tsp Onion Powder
  • ½ tsp Garlic Powder
  • ¼ tsp ground Cayenne Pepper
  • About ½ tsp each of Salt & Pepper


Slice your sweet potatoes into ¼ inch thick strips (you can peel them or leave the skin on for added nutrients).  Place the strips into a bowl of cold water for about an hour or two.  This will help remove the starch from the potatoes which will make them nice and crispy.

Preheat your oven to 425°F and prepare two baking sheets by lining them with foil and greasing them with olive oil or spraying them with cooking spray.  In a large bowl, combine the spices.

Rinse the potatoes and towel dry them.  Place them into the bowl of seasonings and drizzle them with olive oil.  Toss until they are evenly coated with oil and spices.  Spread them out onto the two baking sheets and place them in the oven.  Bake for about 20-25 minutes, flipping the fries halfway through.  Check them regularly toward the end of the bake time to make sure they aren’t burning (brown sugar and the natural sugars in the sweet potatoes tend to do this if you’re not paying attention).  Remove them from the oven and season with more salt & pepper if necessary.  Serve immediately.
